The free navigation software is available for the Nokia N78. Last week Nokia announced Ovi Maps, free software for Nokia phones. New phones will be shipped with this software, but it is available as a free download at the Nokia website.

And the changes are as follows:

Standby screen:

*When Music Player is operating, the transition from one song to another song has noticeably improved from Version 21.002
*Call log, Contacts and calling function:
*The Calling speed (i.e. from standby screen to Contacts or the Call Log) and transition to call/disconnected screens has improved from version 21.002.
*A New menu option has been added to in the in-call menu to facilitate MMS Sending during any phone call.
*The Maximum Volume of the Loudspeaker has been decreased.

Maps:

*The Maps starts up blazingly fast now and also the speed through all the Maps menus are very fast now as compared to Maps 2.0
*Switching over to various different views is very smooth and fast now, i.e. to Map 3D etc.
*It is now possible for Maps to be upgraded to Ovi Maps 3.01 flawlessly.

Music Player:

*There has been a huge improvements in the equaliser and sound quality. Even background sounds and other channels are now more noticeable. The default equaliser settings are quite good. Bass is now less crunchy than before.
*The annoying split-second delays when pressing the volume keys to change between volume levels has now been removed. Also the delay that happened while running multiple applications has been fixed now.
* The occasional freezes in the music player has been fixed. However, Screen tearing and slow speed in album art appearance is still present though.

Camera and Photos:

*Much to the delight of everybody, the volume keys to zoom while taking photos/recording video has reappeared.
*Going into Details is almost instantaneous now as compared to its previous version.
*The Scrolling speed through thumbnails has remarkably improved and is only minimally jerky now. Also, the scrolling speed has also been improved when viewing photos at 100% view has improved in speed.
*The speed while going into menus in Camera is instantaneous now.

Video centre:

*The Logo for the video centre has changed in the menu.
*The appearance of video menu is also now different and seems similar to the newer N-series/E-series style simplified logos.
*The Speed in the video centre is much improved now and is almost instantaneous.
*Changing between volume levels, fast-forward/rewind speed and resume of playback has also been improved drastically and is almost instantaneous now. Even Sound quality seems to have been improved now.

Search:

*The Application has been upgraded from v4.08 to v4.10.0904
*The Logo has also changed and is now looking similar to the newer N-series/E-series simplified styling.
*Performance is faster and Yandex search service has been removed in favour of Live Search and Google (Note: this is for the APAC variant, will vary between different regions and specific countries)

Web:

*Rendering of web pages has improved in speed since v21.
*Rotate Screen option speed is now almost instantaneous
*Speed in Web options menu is now instantaneous
*The pixelation of Minimap on side when scrolling down pages has been fixed.

Other Notable Changes:

*Overall system speed has been improved and is faster as compared to v21.
*The Scrolling in the Multimedia menu from one tab to another when multiple applications are running, has also improved marginally in speed.
*The overall stability of the phone also seems to have been improved.

EC wants one mobile phone charger for all brands

The European Commission plans to force mobile phone manufacturers to manufacture one mobile phone charger for all mobile phones, according the European Commissioner for Industry, Gunther Verheugen in an interview with the German international broadcaster Deutsche Welle. Verheugen said that his patience has been tested enough by the mobile phone industry, which was given several chances to develop one charger for all mobile phones, and he does not exclude severe measures to force the manufacturers to come with a solution.

The main reason for his demand is trying to decrease the volume of electrical waste within Europe, which is become a major environmental problem. The current situation that requires users to purchase a new mobile charger with each new mobile phone has become unbearable according to Verheugen. In a reaction, the president of the European Information & Communications Technology Industry Association (EICTA), Tony Graziano, told Deutsche Welle that Verheugen's demand is legally and technically impossible to due differences in voltage and battery requirements within the European Union, although he acknowledged the increasing burden of mobile phone chargers on the environment. He also said that the industry is not likely to develop one charger for all brands. Verheugen also said that he rather sees the industry to develop such a charger voluntary, but warns that the EC has the legal and political means to force such development.

Nokia released new frimware for the N78 phone. This firmware can be put on the phone using Nokia Software Updater. The Nokia developers added a lot of improvements for bluetooth, the gps-receiver and multimediafiles.

Nokia introduceert de Nokia N79, de nieuwste uitbreiding in het Nseries-gamma. De Nokia Nseries bestaat uit een reeks krachtige multimedia telefoons met doordachte, aanpasbare vormgeving. It's breathing

Although the Nokia N78 looks turned off, when it's not in use, there is a way to see that it's still on. Within the Navi wheel there is a light that flashes every 6-7 seconds. I can imagine why it is called breathing, there is some life in the phone. The same light does an extra flash when you've missed a call or sms. The breathing makes the Nokia N78 extra unique

The 2GB card which is shipped with the N78 is nice, but also in no time full. That is the reason I bought a 8GB MicroSD card last week (only 29.95 euro at Mediamarkt!). It works great and my memory problems are gone (for a few weeks....). A lot of music, many pictues and video's and soon Nokia Maps on it!

Currently a lot of N78 reviews can be found. For the biggest part it is very positive. The quality of the sound, GPS, the speed of S60, the looks, the FM transmitter ect. The one issue that is less positive are the buttons of the n78. For users with thikker fingers it is not good (or they are not used to it yet).

On februari 11th 2008 the Nokia N78 was officially shown for the first time. This took place at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona. The N78 is called the succesor of the very populair N73. The expected release date is the 2nd quarter of2008.
